sourdough for beginners

Hi, I’m Emily

Welcome to Country Roads Sourdough! Here, I share my no-stress approach to making sourdough bread. If you want to make sourdough bread but don’t have the time or energy to feed a starter daily, or spend hours meticulously following complex recipes, I’m your girl. As a mom of two and a business owner, I recognize the value of simplicity and flexibility in baking. I’m so excited to share my time-saving hacks, spill my best-kept tips and tricks, and whip up a bunch of my favorite sourdough recipes with you.

Where it all began

Back in 2019, I attempted to make a sourdough starter but hit a few bumps along the way.  I was so confused on what I was supposed to do and I quickly ran out of patience. After bidding farewell to my first attempt, I swore off sourdough forever, at least so I thought.

A few months later, I decided to give sourdough another shot and took a class from a friend. The moment I opened the oven and laid eyes on my first successful loaf, I was on cloud nine. I couldn’t believe the girl who had never even made a loaf of bread before could make an artisan sourdough loaf. That’s when I realized sourdough wasn’t the complicated ordeal I once believed.

I created Country Roads Sourdough with the mission of showing others that sourdough doesn’t have to be overwhelming. I am a firm believer that anyone can do it. It doesn’t have to be so serious and you don’t have to abide by all the rules. It’s just bread! So you skipped a feeding, left the dough out a little too long, or forgot a step? It’s going to be ok! Throw some butter on it and call it a day.

Let’s take the pressure off of being perfect and just enjoy some homemade bread.

Get to know me

I’m a country girl at heart and grew up riding horses on our small hobby farm in Vermilion, Ohio. But after high school I left the country and moved to Utah for college, graduating with a degree in Marketing.

While in Utah I married my husband James. We joke it was an arranged marriage because our parents set us up. Our parents were in the Air Force together before we were born and once they reconnected on Facebook they realized they had kids the same age. So we have Facebook and our parents to thank for our marriage.

Since getting married we have lived in Utah, Idaho, Ohio, and now West Virginia while James finishes up medical school. I’m a stay-at-home mom of two boys, Rowan and Brier, who are both named after the place we lived at the time (Idaho and West Virginia).

We love being outside and enjoy hiking and biking. We are very active in our church and I strive daily to strengthen my relationship with God. My happy places are at the gym and in the kitchen. I’m not one for overly complicated recipes or following recipes exactly, I’m more of a wing it type person. My love for sourdough bread runs deeps and I love sharing my recipes and knowledge with all of you.
